Nashville’s Crys Matthews is being hailed as “the next Woody Guthrie” for her powerful social justice music. A talented lyricist, Matthews uses her songs to reflect her diverse experiences, earning praise for bridging divides. Her new album, Changemakers, aims to join the ranks of social-justice icons like Sweet Honey in the Rock and Holly Near. ASCAP’s Eric Philbrook commends her for uplifting spirits with heartfelt, socially conscious music.

Matthews began performing in 2010 and gained significant acclaim in 2017, winning the New Song Music and Performance Competition at Lincoln Center and releasing two projects: The Imagineers and Battle Hymn for an Army of Lovers. She won the People’s Music Network’s Social Justice Songs contest and performed at major festivals like Sundance and Kerrville Folk Festival.

In her TED Talk, “Sing, Don’t Shout — An Alternative Approach,” Matthews discusses her upbringing in North Carolina and her transformation from a classically trained clarinetist to a folk singer. Emphasizing hope and activism, her album Changemakers addresses topics like immigration, the opioid crisis, Black Lives Matter, and gun safety, aiming to document the events of recent years and inspire listeners. Matthews’s music resonates deeply, reminding us of its power to heal and unite.
